Jordanian spokesman warns that “actions by the Israeli security forces and settlers in the area of the Al-Aqsa mosque … could spark riots and violent incidents” • Israeli official: “There is no place for this type of comment.”
The already high tensions on the Temple Mount were exacerbated even further on Monday when Jordan and Israel issued tough statements against each other.
Jordanian spokesman Mohammed Momani openly criticized Israel for its actions on the Temple Mount and warned of grave consequences if Israel fails to change its policies.
An Israeli government official decried Momani’s statement, saying, “There is no place for this type of comment.”
“Israel is acting responsibly and Jordan knows it,” the Israeli official said.
Speaking with Jordan’s state-run news agency, Momani said, “There will be grave consequences for the invasion of Israeli security forces to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.” He also warned that “the presence of extremist settlers at the Temple Mount compound could spark riots and violent incidents.”
